Response to changes in NZS 3604:2011

It is thought timely to inform our customers of the impacts of the changes this standard will have on our product range going forward. Over the ensuing months you will see our website and material updated bringing our product range into line with this new standard.

A brief summary of our product range and the changes are as follows:

Radiata G8 Verified
The product itself will remain identical – a wet treated, outdoor, verified and visually graded product. The size range will also remain the same; 75 x 50 to 300 x 100 and 125 x 125. The one change you will see is the new product name. We will be introducing a brand name, linking with the new SG8 terminology as outlined in NZS 3604:2011.

Radiata Premium VSG8 Verified
This is currently a kiln dried H3.1 Clear Azole Treated premium product that is called on for exposed structural applications where visual appearance is paramount. To treat an appearance grade product with the pink dyed H1.2 Boron would impair the visual element that the design may be seeking. H3.1 Treatment is still allowed under the new NZS 3604:2011 rules as an alternative solution. We have decided to leave this product as H3.1 Clear Treated as there is no current viable alternative. This product has been a very popular choice for visually exposed structural work and we will continue to promote it for these specialty applications. This product will be re-introduced under a new brand name linked with the new SG8 terminology as outlined in NZS 3604:2011.

Radiata No.1 Frame
Under the changes in NZS 3604:2011, this no longer remains a recognised structural timber grade. The product characteristics will remain identical and it still will be a very popular option for extra large size timbers that can’t be verified. The two most popular sizes, 150 x 150 and 200 x 200 we have become verified for as an SG6 grade. Please note that all Radiata No.1 Frame products do not automatically become SG6 products under the new standard. Every size sold as SG6 is subject to the timber verification process as outlined in NZS 3622. The balance of the sizes we will continue to sell as an non verified, visually graded product, stocking sizes up to 300 x 300 and custom cutting to your requirements. Along with our verified range, this range will also be rebranded to become part of our new family of brands for solid timber beam products.

Radiata MSG8, 10 & 12
Traditionally we have sold this range as an H3.1 Treated product. We will now offer an H1.2 Boron range as well, bringing it into line with the current NZS 3604: 2011. Also with the change in the grading terminology, this product will now be sold as “Radiata Pine SG8, SG10 & SG12 Framing.”
Please note that this range wil continue to be distinct from the rest of our structural timber products as a non visual grade for standard interior framing applications, with obvious paint and indentation branding on the faces. We will continue to specialise in stocking long lengths up to 7.2m and multiple size and part packet orders.

Douglas Fir VSG8 Verified
This successful new range we have introduced over the past year has had its applications and opportunities widened under the recent changes outlined in NZS 3604:2011. This range has been developed for high end, visually exposed applications and will continue to be produced as an untreated product (avoiding the pink dye of H1.2 Boron) and branded one edge only. H1.2 Treatment will be available on request. This product will be re-introduced under a new brand name, linked with the new SG8 terminology, to bring it into line with the new changes.
